PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) can develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. Core features include intrusive memories or nightmares, avoidance of reminders, negative shifts in mood and beliefs, and a persistently heightened state of alert.
PTSD is treatable: trauma focused psychological therapies have the strongest evidence, with medication supporting selected cases. Symptoms lasting more than a month after trauma warrant assessment. A GP can make the diagnosis, begin support and refer to trauma trained psychologists, with telehealth easing access outside major cities.
