PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a common hormonal condition affecting roughly one in ten Australian women. Features can include irregular periods, elevated androgens causing acne or excess hair growth, insulin resistance and difficulty managing weight.

Diagnosis follows established criteria using history, blood tests and sometimes ultrasound. Management is tailored to the person and their goals, spanning nutrition and activity, hormonal treatments, insulin sensitising medicines and fertility support, coordinated by a GP with specialist referral where needed.
