PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme)

The PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) is the Australian government program that subsidises the cost of a wide range of prescription medicines. When a medicine is PBS listed for a specific condition, eligible patients pay a capped co payment rather than the full private price.

Not every medicine, dose or use is PBS covered. Some medicines are prescribed privately, meaning the patient pays the full pharmacy price. A prescriber or pharmacist can explain whether a given script falls under the PBS or is a private prescription.
