Nicotine Withdrawal

Nicotine withdrawal is the set of physical and mental symptoms that follow stopping nicotine after regular use. Common symptoms include irritability, restlessness, low mood, difficulty concentrating, increased appetite and strong cravings.

Symptoms usually peak in the first week and settle over two to four weeks, although cravings can recur with triggers for longer. Medicines such as NRT, varenicline and bupropion reduce withdrawal intensity, and a quit smoking consultation builds a plan for managing the difficult early weeks.
