A mental health care plan, formally a Mental Health Treatment Plan, is prepared by a GP for a patient with a diagnosed mental health condition. It assesses needs, sets goals and refers to a psychologist or other eligible provider.
The plan gives access to Medicare rebated psychological therapy sessions each calendar year, with reviews along the way. Preparing one requires a longer GP consultation, which can be conducted by telehealth, making the first step easier for people hesitant to discuss mental health in person.
