Informed consent is the process by which a patient agrees to treatment after understanding what it involves, its expected benefits, material risks and reasonable alternatives, including doing nothing. It is a legal and ethical requirement across Australian healthcare, not paperwork alone.
In telehealth, consent also covers the mode of care: understanding what can and cannot be assessed remotely and when an in person examination is needed. Good consent is a conversation, and patients are always free to ask questions or decline.
