Burnout is a state of exhaustion, mental distance from work and reduced effectiveness resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. The World Health Organization classifies it as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition.
Burnout overlaps with, and can progress to, depression and anxiety, so persistent symptoms deserve a proper assessment rather than pushing through. Recovery involves workload change, rest, boundaries and psychological support. A GP can rule out medical mimics such as thyroid conditions and coordinate mental health care.
