BMI (body mass index) is a screening measure calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. Australian guidelines broadly class a BMI of 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or above as obese for most adults.
BMI is a useful population level tool but an incomplete individual measure, since it cannot distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is stored. Clinicians pair it with waist circumference, blood tests and sometimes body composition scanning to build an accurate picture of metabolic health.
