Who Should Consider an ASD Assessment for Adults or Children?

If you or your child are seeking clarity, Holistica Health provides a fast-tracked, clinician-led pathway. An assessment is highly recommended for those who:

  • Suspect Autism Spectrum Disorder: Individuals or parents who recognize traits of ASD and require a professional, diagnostic opinion.
  • Experience Social Communication Challenges: Children struggling to make friends or adults facing persistent difficulties with social cues and interaction.
  • Have Sensory Processing Sensitivities: Those who feel overwhelmed by light, sound, or textures in everyday environments.
  • Are Seeking a Formal Diagnosis: People who have always felt “different” but never had an official assessment to confirm their neurodivergence.
  • Require Routine and Predictability: Adults or children who struggle with transitions, rigid schedules, or unexpected changes.
  • Have a “Missing Piece” Post-ADHD Diagnosis: Those with an existing ADHD diagnosis who feel it doesn’t fully explain their behavioral or social profile.
  • Need NDIS Access or Support Plans: Families and individuals seeking a formal ASD diagnosis to unlock NDIS funding, school adjustments, or workplace support.
  • Live in Regional or Remote Australia: Anyone requiring telehealth ASD assessments due to limited local access to specialists.
  • Want to Skip Long Waitlists: Those currently stuck on 18-month waiting lists who need a guaranteed 6-week result.

What is the first step to getting an Autism Diagnosis in Australia?

The first step is an ASD screening and clinical assessment with a GP or specialist. At Holistica Health, parents and patients complete a digital screening questionnaire followed by a telehealth consultation with an AHPRA-registered GP who reviews symptoms, history, and suitability for specialist referral.

Yes. Initial ASD screening and GP-led clinical assessments can be conducted via telehealth. Our clinicians gather a thorough developmental and behavioural history remotely, allowing patients to access support from anywhere in Australia.

While typical Australian waitlists for adult and child autism assessments exceed 18 months, Holistica Health delivers a 6-week turnaround. Our streamlined GP-to-psychiatrist pathway ensures you access essential support significantly faster

Yes. A formal ASD diagnosis is typically made by a psychiatrist or multidisciplinary team in Australia. Our GPs play a critical role in screening, preparing referral documentation, and connecting you to our specialist.

  • In Children: Signs often include delayed speech, repetitive play, difficulty transitioning between tasks, and intense sensory reactions to noise or textures.
  • In Adults: Symptoms are frequently more subtle due to “masking” (developing coping strategies to mimic social norms). Adults may experience social exhaustion, persistent difficulties with workplace communication, or a lifelong feeling of being “different” without a clear cause.

Yes. A formal ASD diagnosis from our psychiatrist can support an NDIS access request. Our GPs can assist with supporting documentation as part of your care pathway where clinically appropriate.
